AZ DOT installs STC advance flasher
TEMPE, AZ - 01/04/2012 - On short notice, ADOT added a Solar Traffic Controls
solar-powered advance flasher for a new traffic signal installation in
Flagstaff. The project consisted of a single unit with double 12-inch
beacons located in advance of the Fort Valley and Shultz Pass Road
intersection.
With a curve in the road limiting visibility on eastbound Fort Valley Road,
it was decided that an advance flasher with a W3-3 sign was in order. One of
the big problems: a power feed from the intersection would have been too
expensive since a major utility right-of-way crossed there with high
pressure gas lines and fiber optics. A more affordable and timely option to
the AC connection was a solar-powered beacon.
STC president, Joe Wise, went along for the install to provide training on
the installation and operation of the flasher. All ADOT personnel in
attendance received TARP points for the time spent on the installation.
