NMDOT activates solar-powered speed warning assemblies

TEMPE, AZ - 02/28/2008 - New Mexico DOT recently fielded equipment to modify driver behavior along southbound SR 285 at the entry to the Pojoaque area. The equipment was furnished by Traffic Signal Controls and installed by McDade-Woodcock.

The assemblies consist of a set of 12-inch amber LED lamps and a VSC-1520 radar speed display. The solar power equipment, control logic and flashing beacons were supplied by Solar Traffic Controls. The VSC-1520 radar sign from Information Display Company is configured to provide a violator alert output signal to the STC control logic.

Under normal operating conditions the VSC radar sign displays the speed of approaching vehicles. When a vehicle exceeds the posted speed limit by a preset threshold, the sign flashes the speed to warn the driver and activates the flashing beacons which flash for a preset time. Run time for the lamps can be adjusted on an LCD screen in the control enclosure and the number of lamp activations per day is included in the standby screen data.
