STC adds more solar-powered school flashers/radar units in Goodyear

TEMPE, AZ - 08/27/2007 - The City of Goodyear, Arizona recently expanded its school flasher program from four to 10 Solar Traffic Controls (STC) systems. The project includes four new school flasher/radar units. Two flasher units were purchased for a side street with lower traffic volumes to alert motorists to slow down near the school zone.

Traffic studies of the original systems demonstrated their effectiveness: motorists reduced their speed in school zones. Goodyear has run its systems on a split schedule, 2 hours each morning and afternoon, and will now move to an all-day schedule.

Goodyear has had STC systems installed for three years in two other schools within its city limits. One school zone was equipped with 3M Driver Feedback signs and dual 8-inch amber flashers; the other with FAST 250 LED radar display signs and dual 8-inch amber flashers. The city chose to expand its flasher program using the FAST 250 LED radar displays on the new installations. All systems are equipped with high-efficiency DC LED lamps manufactured by STC, based on a Precision Solar Controls design. System operation is controlled using an STC-01 clock which the city programs using a Desktop Programming package and portable memory modules.

The project was purchased with installation services. STC assembled the systems at its Tempe, AZ facility; they were installed by Trafficade Services of Phoenix. An STC engineer was on site to oversee installation of the systems for the city and provide training on their operation.
