Solar Traffic Controls flashers ensure safety in City of Deming, New Mexico

TEMPE AZ 07/25/2005 - Adding to the successful installation of four radar speed displays at two Deming schools in 2004, Solar Traffic Controls has also recently provided speed zone signals for the city's post office.

Motorists can keep a sharp eye out near the Deming Post Office and pedestrians can cross with added confidence now that solar-powered speed zone signals have been designated to serve the heavily congested area during postal business hours. "The signals will flash and operate during the window hours inside the post office," said City of Deming Assistant Administrator Rick McInturff. "This has been a problem area for us," said Deming Police Chief Michael Carillo. "It's been heavily patrolled by our department, thanks to a Traffic Enforcement Grant, and we try to run PSA's (Public Service Announcements) to help with the congestion during business hours, the narrow street and the pedestrian traffic, too."

"One complaint we kept hearing was that the 15-mph speed limit signs were not visible enough near the post office. Motorists won't have that excuse anymore with lights flashing and your miles per hour flashed up on a screen," Carillo said.

McInturff said that school resource officers reported dramatic drops in the school zones where the signals have been operating this past school year.

"The solar-powered units work well in that we don't have to pay for an electrical connection," McInturff said.
