DCUPS Power for Alaska DOT

TEMPE, AZ - 04/26/2010 - Solar Traffic Controls (STC) recently teamed with Advanced Traffic Products (ATP) to provide DCUPS systems for Wavetronix sensors in Alaska. Their network of sensors was expanded and STC has furnished another installment for deployment in Alaska.

The power systems do not include any solar components as there was insufficient winter solar radiation to use a purely solar solution. Project designers chose to install the systems on existing light poles.

Power is available at night so STC designed a Direct Current Uninterruptible Power Supply (DCUPS) for the project. The unit accepts either 480 or 240VAC from the lamp power circuit and steps it down to 120VAC to run the system battery charger and heating circuit.

The system uses a marine-grade, three-stage battery charger to recharge the battery each night. Due to cold temperatures at the site, each system includes a thermostat and a heating pad in the battery compartment. In addition, the battery compartment is insulated to help retain warmth. The battery provides an uninterrupted DC power source for the sensor and includes a low voltage disconnect circuit to protect the battery from too deeply discharging.
