STC Solar Ped-X Crosswalks
TEMPE, AZ - 01/04/2012 - Pedestrian crossing safety was increased in the Town
of Guadalupe, Arizona, with the installation of four Solar Traffic Controls
solar Ped-X crossing systems. Guadalupe is a residential area in an
unincorporated area of Maricopa County and experiences a high volume of
cut-through traffic on Guadalupe Road from surrounding communities.
The town has only one traffic signal located in its center and multiple
pedestrian crossings throughout. Some of these crossings proved difficult
to use at certain times of the day due to the high traffic volumes yet did
not warrant the installation of either a full blown signal or a Hawk
crossing signal.
STC furnished four sets of crossing signals to Bison Construction of Phoenix
under the project. Each solar Ped-X set features dual 8-inch amber DC LED
lamps (STC Model 8408a4920B) and a Polara Bulldog push button. Each pole
features its own solar array and battery bank. All communication between
units is via Frequency Hopping Spread Spectrum (FHSS) radio to provide a
wireless link between the units in a set.
The project also included new landscaping and pedestrian enhanced trails.
