STC delivers radar speed signs to Maricopa County, AZ
TEMPE, AZ - 03/01/2012 - Solar Traffic Controls, distributor for
TraffiCalm's driver feedback sign in AZ and NM, recently delivered radar
speed signs to Maricopa County DOT for installation along a desert route.
Popular with motorcyclists, the route lies north of Phoenix. Both locations
along the roadway have had numerous collisions due to motorists' high speeds
going into the turns despite cautionary signs warning of curves. Maricopa
County decided to try a solar-powered driver feedback sign to reduce these
accidents.
The county selected TraffiCalm's DriveBrite(TM) driver feedback urban sign
which features 15-inch characters with a programmable flash and color
presentation. The county chose to display solid amber characters when
motorists were above a minimum speed but below the posted speed limit.
Vehicles approaching slightly above the speed limit will see flashing amber
characters warning them to slow down. Vehicles approaching at higher
velocities see flashing red digits interlaced with white strobes around the
display face.
Observation of driver response to the signs during a field visit showed many
drivers hitting the brakes when the red digits were shown. The sign also
includes data logging and a user-friendly software package for review of the
data.
STC furnished the signs and the solar power systems to ensure operation
24/7/annually. AJP Electric provided the installation services for the
county.
