STC adds radio-activated flashers to Glendale, AZ Fire Station

TEMPE, AZ - 01/02/2008 - The City of Glendale, AZ has added radio-activated, Type 1 fire station flashers manufactured by Solar Traffic Controls (STC) to one of its existing fire stations. The project consists of two flashing beacon units located approximately 300 feet in advance of the fire station driveway on each approach mounted on 4.5-inch O.D. poles. A third system was installed on a mast arm pole assembly immediately in front of the fire station driveway.

Due to a nearby intersection, traffic often backs up in front of the fire station driveway during rush hour, hence the third flasher unit and its location. To deal with the traffic back-up the city requested a means of triggering the pre-emption detector at the intersection causing the backup using the fire station flashing beacon. STC included an optical emitter package for the flasher closest to the intersection and included a modification in the software making this feature field adjustable.

Each system uses dual 12-inch amber DC LED lamps and an omni-directional clear strobe lamp at the top of the solar array. Control for the flashing beacons is based on the STC XSR flasher product line and includes an LCD user interface screen for adjustment of the operating parameters. Radio activation is accomplished using a low cost one-way radio link from a wall mounted transmitter unit inside the station. Equipment furnished for the project is compatible with most of the existing solar flashing beacons in the city thus minimizing spare parts.
